Ooty Municipal Market

Located in the heart of the town of Ooty, this market is known for its abundant supply of fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers.  Everyday a fresh catch of fish is brought up from nearby coastal cities of Chennai and the state of Kerala.  The meat market carries everything from poultry to beef, pork and mutton.  It is a regular hubbub of activity on market days when the locals come in from surrounding villages to make their weekly purchases.  Other sections of the market sell colorful fabric, buttons, ribbons, clothing, agricultural needs, stationary and kitchen ware.

One of the best known bakeries in the world, National Bakery, is located just inside the market from the Upper Market road.  You can get fresh baked bread, coconut balls and the moistest of cakes in town.  Come Christmas time and the best plum cake in town is available as well.

Most of the time the market is dry, but around the monsoon you definitely want to bring your umbrella and a raincoat!  The vendors cover the walkways with tarps, however with a gusty wind, you are bound to get a whole lot of cold water dumped down your collar!

The Ooty market, will no doubt leave you with many memories and lingering tastes of mountain living, so stop on by and spend a pleasant morning wandering through it.
